In a landmark announcement during a press conference held on Saturday, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced that a significant plot in Malé, formerly designated for the Coral Boulevard project, will now be repurposed for the development of a Special Quranic Waqf Building.
This initiative is part of the government’s broader Waqf program—the largest Islamic sector development plan in the country’s history. Under this initiative, three major Waqf buildings are slated for construction in the Malé region:
The Darussalam Islamic Complex in Hulhumalé Phase 1
The Darul Arqam Waqf Building in Malé
The Special Quranic Waqf Building, also in Malé
President Muizzu confirmed that land has already been allocated for all three projects. Specifically, the Special Quranic Waqf Building will occupy 10,000 square feet of the 70,000 square foot plot near Rasfannu—previously earmarked for Coral Boulevard.
He emphasized that these Waqf structures are designed to be financially self-sustaining. Revenue generated from these buildings will be reinvested into Islamic activities, eliminating the need for allocations from the state’s annual budget.
Highlighting the scale of the government’s religious infrastructure agenda, the President noted that 21 mosque construction projects are currently underway across the nation, with 17 more recently contracted. He described this as the highest number of mosque developments ever carried out simultaneously in a single year.
Both the Darul Arqam and Darussalam Waqf Buildings are planned as 12-story developments, symbolizing a new chapter in the integration of sustainable religious infrastructure and urban development in the Maldives.
