In line with President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledge, the Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr. Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has revealed that work is set to begin on the construction of six new mosques across the Maldives after this year’s Ramadan. These mosques will be built on the islands of AA. Rasdhoo, ADh. Fenfushi, F. Feeali, GDh. Madaveli, HA. Baarah, and Th. Veymandoo, with funding from the state budget.
The new mosques will be equipped with modern amenities, including solar panels, air conditioning, and nylon flooring. In addition to serving as places of worship, each mosque will feature a dedicated classroom for Quranic teachings. The structures will be built according to new designs developed by Ryan Private Limited, reflecting the rich history, culture, and environment of the Maldives. Mosques will have capacities of 300, 500, and 700 people, catering to the growing needs of local communities.
This development comes as part of the government’s broader efforts to improve infrastructure and services for the Maldivian population. The new mosques will join the 35 ongoing mosque projects, bringing the total number of mosque constructions under the government’s initiative to 41. Furthermore, 12 additional mosque projects are currently underway, funded by generous private donors. The Ministry of Islamic Affairs is working diligently to ensure the swift completion of these vital religious structures, enhancing the spiritual and community life of the islands.
