In his 2024 Presidential Address, President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to initiate 35 mosque construction projects across various regions of the Maldives within the year. This initiative aims to enhance the nation’s religious infrastructure and provide improved facilities for worshippers.
To oversee and improve mosque conditions, the government has re-established the National Council for Mosques. The council will conduct regular meetings and monitor mosque conditions daily to ensure they meet the needs of the community.
Additionally, the President highlighted that MVR 7,868,953.00 has been allocated from the 2024 state budget for mosque maintenance and repairs, reflecting the government’s commitment to preserving and enhancing these vital community spaces.
Since taking office, the administration has prioritized expediting various delayed projects. Notably, mosque construction work has commenced in Malé and several islands nationwide, in collaboration with numerous private partners, demonstrating a concerted effort to improve religious facilities across the country.
These developments underscore the government’s dedication to strengthening the nation’s religious infrastructure and ensuring that mosques serve as accessible and well-maintained places of worship for all citizens.
